We originally created an Animal Wall poster for a very well received homeless charity campaign with St David's shopping centre called We Loves The 'Diff in 2017. People loved it, so we've reprised the stylised artwork for these new cards and four A3 size posters.
Generations of Cardiffians have loved the magical, whimsical (and a little bit scary) Animal Wall which was designed by William Burges in 1866. Did you know that the animals once sat right outside the front gates but were moved in 1922 due to road widening? Did you also know that the original batch of nine animals sculptured by Thomas Nicholls have glass eyes and initially were realistically painted too?
A second batch of six animals (created by Alexander Carrick) was added in 1931 – these are the six animals on the left on the card. The Animal Wall comprises a pelican, anteater, a pair of cwtching raccoons, a leopard, beaver, vulture, hyena, wolf, two apes (baboons), a seal (Billy?), bear, lioness, lynx, and two lions with shields located on the castle's side gate (but we've shown only Righty).
